There are three components to the overall program:
- Team Projects
- Community Orientation
- Enhancing leadership skills/styles
Team Projects
Each class is divided into 5-7 member project teams. Each team selects a project they have agreed upon to complete during the course of the program. Teams choose from a list of projects submitted by area non-profit organizations, or if a team member knows of a community need and can convince the rest of the team to work on it, the team may pursue that project. The project time frame runs from November to May and should be completed by the end of the Leadership Raleigh program.
Examples of Previous Team Projects
Assist Raleigh Little Theatre in developing a one-day generic format for workshop training in diversity for staff and board members. The workshop included case studies, a lunchtime performance and a wide range of local speakers. The sessions emphasized how to increase the participation of different ethnic and racial groups in programming and other activities of arts organizations. The workshop content provided area arts organizations with the necessary tools to create their own diversity plans.
Provide a comprehensive plan addressing the development of a portable community tool trailer for People for Parks. The plan included the following operational issues, name of the trailer, membership/use agreements, liability, suggested content/inventory of tools, funding sources or in kind donations, marketing strategy, maintenance plan and other logistical issues. The following year another Leadership Raleigh team designed a plan to implement a People for Parks signature event that both raises funds for parks and greenway projects but develops positive community awareness about the organization.
Develop a technology needs plan for SAFEchild that would increase the agencys capacity to provide child abuse prevention services in Wake County. Specifically, work with a technology subcommittee to evaluate technology needs, assess current technological equipment owned or leased by the agency, evaluate technological gaps in staff expertise, recommend which equipment upgrades are needed, research costs of the upgrades and learning opportunities for staff.
Work with the Boys & Girls Club of Wake County to provide assistance in implementing a strategic communication plan. Specific media and promotional campaign tools and procedures were designed, which included an informal survey of local media regarding outreach efforts, media relations training overview for staff, board members and volunteers; developing a consistent tracking and communications process with alumni; develop a speaker presentation for a cross-section of the community to champion the organization and create stock, ready-to-go member profile templates to insure a consistent look.
Community Orientation
Eight program sessions address - quality of life, law enforcement, human services, government, economy, education, health services and media. Various sites in the area will be toured, such as Memorial Auditorium, Central Prison, Raleigh Rescue Mission, NCSUs Centennial Campus, Exploris, Poe Health Education Center, WakeMed and WRAL-TV. Co-chairs from the previous class plan each session. Topics within each session are current and panel discussions deal with area challenges and issues.
Pre-session opportunities are a part of the community orientation:
- A police ride-along to coincide with the law enforcement day in November.
- Work at the Soup Kitchen in downtown Raleigh to coincide with the Human Services session in December.
- Observe in the WakeMed Emergency Dept. to coincide with Health Services in April.
Enhancing Leadership Skills/Styles
Leadership skills and styles are addressed at both the fall and spring retreats and at several program sessions during the year. For example: skills-building topics might include boardsmanship, visioning, consensus building or facilitating during the program year. Identifying and enhancing an individual's leadership style is addressed at the fall retreat.
